Tim Powers and his Expiration Date

April 9th, 2010

I have enjoyed every one of the Tim Powers books I have read so far. It was great that I came across him. I hope he has more new stuff coming out soon.

Expiration Date is the second book in a loose trilogy that started with Last Call and ends with Earthquake Weather. Not really a true trilogy since characters aren’t shared in the three books. But more of a shared universe with related themes and locations.

Expiration Date has some interesting concepts and Powers has always been great when it comes to big and interesting ideas. This book, however, Powers lacks the execution he had in Last Call and his other works. It has been tough to get into and my usually two weeks to finish a book of this size has taken longer because I have been ignoring it day to day.

I really want to like this book.  I really want to finish this book.  I hope by the end of it I can come back and say how great it was and that the build up has a huge pay off by the end.

I hope.

In Short: Book Reviews

November 16th, 2009

Since I Can’t seem to find the words to write lengthy reviews for a few books I have read recently I’ll give some quick reviews for each.

This set of In Short reviews includes Boneshaker by Cherie Priest, The Stress of Her Regard by Tim Powers, and The Affinity Bridge by George Mann.

All worth reading.

Finally I Get to be Useful While Buying Birthday Presents

November 3rd, 2009

We have a friend that has a birthday coming up soon.  And this friend actually reads (sorry my other friends, I know you might read here and there and more than likely from the NY Times Bestseller list, so don’t be offended I just don’t consider you readers, more like Weekend Warriors of Reading).

I get to swoop in, be a hero,  and buy him some books for his birthday.

So today I went to my local Barnes and Noble and picked up four volumes.  Now as I drove to the store I was wondering what theme I should follow in buying these books.  It was this entire long thought out process and it really isn’t relevant right now, but needless to say I abandoned all that crap and just decided to buy him four books that I really enjoyed and I tried to have a broad range of writers and genres (OK broad range of genres within the speculative fiction areas including SF, Fantasy, horror, weird fiction and such).

Here is what I bought. (No peeking my friend that has a birthday coming up)
