My Book Store Lament

As It Pertains to Life in This World Reflected in Linear Feet of Shelf Space

I was at my local Borders the other day.  Nothing unusual about that but something happened that made me very sad.  It isn’t about the decreasing space for actual books in a book store (that is another topic) but about the linear feet of shelf space reserved for certain subjects.

Since this entry pertains to life in general I am not discussing the decrease in shelf space for horror or SF (once again another topic for another day).  I am talking about the decrease in the shelf space for books on science and mathematics compared to say self-help or religion/occult/superstition.

On 200 years and 150 Years.

200 years ago is right on the cusp of our understanding the scale of time.  When we discuss millions or billions of years it is tough to understand the scale of 1 million years ago let alone 2 billion years.  200 years is easier to comprehend.  But even that time frame is just at the edges of our comprehension.  200 years ago two men were born.  One would explain the biodiversity of the world and one would become one of the greatest Presidents of the United States.

OK Maybe I Haven't Lost It Just Yet

Because I was a bit tired today and the temperature was around 13 degrees I didn’t go for a run. I did go to Barnes and Noble to spend some of my gift card money. The last foray into the local B&N was fruitless, I didn’t seem to have the motivation to buy anything. But this time I ended up with a few books.
