Nightstand Reviews: Scott Westerfeld

December 1st, 2009

I was introduced to Scott Westerfeld’s work by Jack Haringa.  I am glad he did. And I’m glad I took his advice and picked up Westerfeld’s books.  Most of the time when people recommend books to me I respond politely that I will check so-and-so author out and smile all the while not having any inkling to actually pick up the recommended book.  Most books people recommend are crap (My recommendations aside, they are always on the money).

But Jack’s advice panned out.  I have included four quick reviews of Scott Westerfeld’s books; Uglies, Pretties, Peeps, and The Last Days. All excellent books.  I have also read of his The Midnighter Series, and the penultimate book in the Uglies Series, Specials, and I will be reading the final book in that series, Extras,  soon.

The System of the World (Limited Edition), Three Days to Never (signed First Edition), Lord Kelvin's Machine (First Edition)

I had ordered three books from Ab Normal Books back on December 23rd.  They shipped it out the next day and I was expecting to see the books right after Newton-mas. But, alas, the USPS decided that in their rush to get other packages to whiny children and those awful fruitcakes (there are good fruitcakes mind you,  here is a great recipe) to their intended recipients, I was left waiting.

On Wanting It All in My Head at the Same Time

October 3rd, 2008

Extraordinary EnginesI had placed an order at Barnes and Noble, mostly for a few books that my wife wanted, so I took advantage and added a few books that I had my eye on in the past.  After placing that order, Jay Lake (Link salad for a hump day | jlake.com) posted that a new steampunk short story collection he has a story in was just published.  So off to Barnes and Noble I went to pick up Extraordinary Engines: The Definitive Steampunk Anthology. While there I also ran across a few other books that jumped into my arms as if they were long lost children.
