Beowulf

November 17th, 2009

I watched Beowulf over the weekend. You know, the animation over live actors written by Neil Gaiman and directed by Robert Zemeckis. I enjoyed the movie and thought it was pretty good.  And it got me to thinking about the poem and to the copy I have from Easton Press.

Easton Press’s edition is the translation by William Ellery Leonard a Professor of Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and surprisingly born in Plainfield, NJ (I grew up a town over).  It also has illustrations by Lynd Ward. Yes Easton Press tends to you previously published translations and art work since it decreases their cost. But this doenst’ take away from the production quality of the book.

Comics, Reading, and More

November 2nd, 2009

I’ve said it before, I like that more comic publishers are bringing collected trades out for story arcs or entire series runs. Over the weekend I read through the first two collected Deadpool trades and the first of the Cable/Deadpool trade as well.  I have started to buy more trades of series I dont’ follow regularly but still like to read on occasion without having to store loads of single issues. Blackest Night is one series that I am excited to read when it comes out in a collected edition.

The one thing that bugs me is keeping the trades in order.  Marvel does a pretty good job of numbering their trades in order to help the reader keep continuity.  DC on the other hand, does a crappy job.  Dark Horse does a good job as well.  but DC needs to make some changes in how they number their trades.

I started Boneshaker by Cherie Priest the other day and after a rough start and not getting into it, I think I finally hit that point in the book where it should sail along at a quickened pace and I should wrap it up by the end of the week.  So far it is underwhelming  but that could change as I get deeper into the story.

I want to get up pictures of my new acquisition of the Kemlscott Chaucer from Easton Press but i haven’t had time to do it justice.  Hopefully in the coming weekends I can find some time.  Easton Press did a magnificent job on this edition and to tell you the truth it puts to shame all the other small press book I have ever purchased for the same price.

With only two months left in the year I’ll start putting together my Read in 2009 list.  So far everything I’ve read has been great.  I’ll do a wrap up in the middle of December.

Curse you Easton Press!

July 29th, 2009

1535_zAs I mentioned just the other day I began reading Master and Commander by Patrick O’Brian and got hooked and will be reading the rest of the series. (And I know Nicolle just loves hearing about this.)

Enter Easton Press.  I know they had a fine edition of the Aubrey/Maturin series but it had slipped my mind since they haven’t been promoting it recently.  But lo and behold in my most recent shipment of the current volume in their Library of Great Poetry, the insert was for, yup you guessed it, The Aubrey/Maturin books.

They must read my blog. I’m feeling a little paranoid now.  But, like a good addict, I sent the response card in.  So it looks like I’ll have the rest of the series coming in monthly for the next two years (I have books 2-4 coming from Amazon, which is fine since multiple copies don’t bother me).

This is how I end up with a house full of books.
